Repeat this remedy on a weekly basis for one to two months.

Hair dryers
In a study, hot-air methods proved highly effective in killing nits, but less so in eradicating live lice. An old-fashioned bonnet dryer killed nearly 89% of nits but just 10% of lice, while a blow dryer using direct heat got rid of nearly 98% of nits and 55% of lice. So use a hair dryer on freshly washed hair to increase your chance of eradicating the little buggers.

But never use hot air after applying a chemical lice treatment. Some may contain flammable ingredients.

Distilled White Vinegar
After you’ve finished the oil treatment, wash hair with shampoo (it may take a couple applications to get all the oil out). Towel dry hair, then completely saturate hair with vinegar, making sure it reaches the scalp (if there are already open sores on the head, you may want to skip this step, since it could burn). Leave the vinegar on for 15 minutes, then wash with shampoo. The vinegar dissolves the “glue” that holds the nits to the hair, making them much easier to comb out.

Coconut Oil. We’ve already stocked up on coconut oil because of all the benefits, right? Well, add this one to the list. Coconut oil is deadly to lice and will kill the adult lice as well as the nymphs as they hatch. Work a couple teaspoons of oil into damp hair, making sure to work it into the scalp. It will make the hair soft and shiny, and it smells fantastic (which is good, considering you just doused the hair in vinegar). After you have eradicated the lice, you can continue to use the coconut oil as a hair treatment, or simply dab a couple drops behind the ears to prevent future infestation.

Comb, comb, comb
Warning this step takes forever. With small kids, we found it was easiest to put on a movie to keep them still. For a detailed description of how to use a lice comb, go here. This should occur every day to every other day for at least 2 weeks.

Almonds
Crush 8 to 10 almonds. Add 2 to 3 teaspoons of lime juice to it. Apply on your scalp and leave it on for half an hour. Finally, wash your hair with shampoo.

Salt
Another good choice to eliminate head lice is salt. Mix ¼ cup each of vinegar and salt. Now, wet your hair slightly and spray this mixture. Cover your head with a shower cap for approximately 2 hours. Wash and apply conditioner. Repeat this procedure in every 3 days to get rid of lice in an easier way.

Petroleum Jelly
Before going to bed, apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly on your scalp. Wrap your head firmly with a towel or shower cap. Leave it on all through the night. Next morning, remove the petroleum jelly using baby oil. Thoroughly comb your hair, and repeat this remedy daily until the problem is solved.

Mayonnaise
The oil present in mayonnaise suffocates the head lice. Put full-fat mayonnaise generously onto your scalp. Now, place a towel or a shower cap over your hair and leave it for 8 hours or let it sit overnight. Shampoo and comb your hair. Repeat this process for a week on a daily basis.
