Baking soda
A spoonful of sodium bicarbonate, or teaspoon-full to be exact, can help put an end to the gnawing, burning, sensation of heartburn caused by acid reflux. Baking soda, as sodium bicarbonate is more commonly known, can help your reflux and in turn help your heartburn because it is a base substance. It has a pH higher than 7.0, and therefore neutralizes stomach acid. Neutralizing the stomach acid means that if/when your LES decides to be lazy and acid comes up your throat, you don’t get “burned.”
You will need…
-1/2 teaspoon or 1 teaspoon of baking soda
-a glass of fresh water
Directions
Mix either a ½ teaspoon or 1 single teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water that is no more than 8 ounces. Give it a good stir and drink all of the mixture. You can repeat this as needed but should not exceed seven ½ teaspoon doses in a 24 hour period. Also, avoid using this as a remedy for more than a week straight, as it is high in salt and can have side effects such as swelling or nausea.
Aloe juice
Aloe is a plant used to soothe burns, and people often think of using it to help something like sunburn, but it can do more than that. It may be able to help with heartburn too because it reduces inflammation. This means when your tummy starts getting irritated and inflamed, or your esophagus is getting eaten away at, a nice glass of aloe vera juice may be just the thing to help calm it down.
You will need…
-1/2 cup aloe vera juice
Directions
Drink a ½ cup of aloe juice, cool or room temperature, before meals. Keep in mind that aloe can act as a laxative, so unless you’re looking to fit in a few extra bathroom Sudoku puzzles, look for a brand that has the laxative component removed.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is one of the most effective home remedies for acid reflux. It aids digestion and helps balance acid production in the stomach.
Mix one to two teaspoons of organic raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water.
Drink it 20 to 30 minutes before eating a meal.
Do this on a regular basis, at least for a few months.
You can also drink apple cider vinegar mixed in water when heartburn strikes.
Chewing Gum
A study published in the Journal of Dental Research found that chewing a piece of sugar-free gum for about 30 minutes after a meal can help relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
It stimulates production of saliva, which in turn washes away acid accumulated in the gut. Being alkaline, saliva also helps neutralize stomach acids.
So, you can have sugar-free chewing gum after meals to ease your acid reflux. You can also consider chewing a cinnamon gum, but avoid mint-flavored gums as mint relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, which contributes to the reflux of stomach acids into the food pipe.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is just about the best breakfast and any-time-of-day snack recommended by The Reflux Diet.
It’s filling and doesn’t cause reflux.
Even instant oatmeal with raisins is “legal” because the oatmeal absorbs the acidity of the raisins.
Ginger
In moderation, ginger is one of the best foods for acid reflux.
It has been used throughout history as an anti-inflammatory and as a treatment for gastrointestinal conditions.
Ginger root can easily be peeled, sliced, diced, or shaved using a grater. You can use it while cooking or add it to smoothies.
Licorice Root
Licorice root is beneficial for acid reflux because of its stomach-healing properties. It soothes the mucus membranes and protects the lining of the gut, reduces gastric inflammation and decreases gastric spasms.
Boil one-half teaspoon of licorice root powder in a cup of water. Strain and drink it 15 to 20 minutes before meals. Use this remedy two or three times a day for one week.
Alternatively, you can take one or two 400 mg chewable DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated licorice) tablets before meals, two or three times a day. Continue for at least a few weeks. You can get this herbal supplement from most natural food stores.
Note: Consult your doctor before taking this herb.
