Top Home Remedies For Strep Throat

Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful solution for strep throat. It possesses anti-bacterial as well as various healing properties that help get rid of the bacteria and boost the immune system to fight the infection.

Mix one to three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in one cup of warm water. Gargle with this solution several times a day for two to three days.
You can also add one tablespoon each of apple cider vinegar and honey to a small glass of warm water. Drink this twice daily for a few days until you feel better.

Cayenne

Cayenne is another very effective natural remedy for strep throat. This pungent spice has anti-inflammatory as well as antibacterial properties that will help reduce inflammation and combat the growth of the bacteria that causes strep throat. The compound called capsaicin in cayenne also aids in flushing toxins and other infection-causing agents out of the body.

Mix together one-fourth teaspoon of cayenne powder, one tablespoon of honey and three grated garlic cloves. Take one-half teaspoon of this mixture every half to one hour, several times a day. Avoid drinking water immediately after taking this mixture.
Alternatively, add one-fourth teaspoon of cayenne pepper and one tablespoon of lemon juice to a glass of hot water. Gargle with this solution several times a day. Follow this remedy for one to two days to notice a huge improvement in your condition.

Anti-inflammatories

One of the most effective treatments for sore throat is probably already in your medicine cabinet: an over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Advil or Aleve.

"These medicines are combination pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, so they'll make you feel better and they'll also reduce some of the swelling associated with a sore throat," Dr. Linder says. "If you have a fever that's also contributing to your symptoms, they can help reduce that as well.

Saltwater gargle

Several studies have found that gargling several times a day with warm salt water can reduce swelling in the throat and loosen mucus, helping to flush out irritants or bacteria.

Doctors generally recommend dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of water. If the salty taste is too unpleasant for you, try adding a small amount of honey to sweeten the mixture slightly. (Just remember to spit the water out after gargling, rather than swallowing!)

Licorice Root

Even if a sore throat isn’t serious enough to warrant a trip to the doctor, it’s still painful and may interfere with a good night’s sleep. Fortunately, there are a number of at-home remedies you can use to soothe the pain and irritation.

Licorice root has long been used to treat sore throats, and recent research shows it is effective when mixed with water to create a gargle solution. A 2009 study, for instance, found it soothed patients’ throats and diminished coughing after surgery.

Slippery Elm

We don’t have many studies on slippery elm, but it’s long been a traditional remedy for sore throat. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Native Americans took it to relieve coughs and sore throats.

Slippery elm has a mucus-like substance in it. When mixed with water, this substance forms a slick gel that coats and soothes. To use, pour boiling water over powdered bark, stir, and drink. You may also find slippery elm lozenges that will help.

Garlic

Natural antiseptics can do wonders for removing bacterial infection from your body. Garlic being one will surely help in stopping the spread of infection and destroying the bacteria. Chew a garlic clove and allow the juice to trickle down your throat. Keep it there without swallowing. You can also mix garlic and onion for better results.Another way to use garlic is to take one cup of hot water and add one teaspoon of grated garlic, 1/4th teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Each one of these ingredients has antiseptic properties and exerts its unique influence in destroying the bacteria. Instead of garlic, you can use onion and make the same decoction.
