Licorice Root
Mouth ulcers can be cured with licorice root, as this herb works as a demulcent and forms a protective coating on the mucous membranes that resists irritation and soothes open lesions. It also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
Soak one tablespoon of crushed licorice root in two cups of water for two to three hours.
Use it as a mouth rinse several times a day.
You can also take deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) extract available as chewable tablets or gargle with DGL dissolved in warm water.
Coconut Milk
Coconut milk is highly beneficial in soothing the pain of mouth ulcers.
Mix a little honey in one tablespoon of coconut milk. Massage the affected area with it. Do this three or four times a day.
Alternatively, you can simply rinse your mouth with fresh coconut milk or massage coconut oil on the affected area.
Honey
Honey is a natural humectant – that is, it helps retain moisture and prevent dehydration. It also helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Tip: Dab a little honey onto the mouth ulcer or mix in a little turmeric to make a paste that can be applied on the affected area.
Tulsi
Leaves of tulsi plant have amazing medicinal properties and one of the important actions of tulsi is as an adaptogen – a substance that aids the body to adapt to stress. Tip: Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence.
Chamomile Tea Bag
Chamomile consists of several daisy-like plants that are most commonly used to induce sleep, promote relaxation, and help with digestion-it works a treat with cramping since it can help relax painful spasms in the digestive track. A chemical compound called bisabolol, or levomenol, is found naturally in German chamomile, and has been shown to reduce inflammation and also have antiseptic properties. Both of these properties will help reduce the pain of canker sores and potentially help speed the healing process.
You will need…
-1 bag of chamomile tea, or a tablespoon of dried flowers wrapped in cheesecloth
-Fresh water
Directions
Soak the chamomile in water for 1 minute or so if using a teabag, and 3-4 if using dried flowers. After soaking place it directly against the sore for 5-10 minutes twice daily to help relieve discomfort and promote speedy healing.
Baking Soda
Certain foods, especially acidic foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, coffee and even chocolates can sometimes cause mouth ulcers. In such a case baking soda comes handy as it neutralizes acid well. It is alkaline and regulates our pH level that in turn may speed up the healing of your ulcers. Baking soda also has some anti-bacterial properties that may treat infections too.
Ways to Use Baking Soda for Mouth Ulcers
Mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda in half a cup of water. Take this solution in your mouth and swish it around there for about a minute. Spit it out. Repeat this 3-5 times a day.
