Fenugreek Seeds
Due to the high mucilage content present in fenugreek seeds, they are considered a useful natural cure for diarrhea. Fenugreek seeds will bulk up your stool and thereby significantly improve the severity and discomfort of diarrhea.
Swallow one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds along with one tablespoon of yogurt.
Another option is to mix one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and one tablespoon of roasted cumin seeds in two tablespoons of yogurt. Eat it two or three times a day.
NOTE: Remedies with fenugreek seeds are not suitable for small children suffering from acute or chronic diarrhea.
Ginger
As ginger is simply good for your overall digestive health, it is always a good option for treating diarrhea.
Mix one teaspoon each of dried ginger powder, cumin powder, cinnamon powder, and honey. Consume it three times a day.
You can use dry ginger or fresh ginger to make a cup of ginger tea as well. Drinking ginger tea two or three times a day will help ease cramps and abdominal pain that sometimes accompany diarrhea.
Another option is to mix equal amounts of ginger juice and lemon juice and add some crushed pepper to it. Have this solution at least three times a day to get rid of diarrhea quickly.
You can also take ginger in capsule form or try foods such as gingersnap cookies, gingerbread, or ginger ale.
NOTE: Those suffering from high blood pressure should not use ginger remedies for diarrhea.
Yogurt
Look for yogurt with live cultures. These "cultures" are friendly bacteria that can go in and line your intestines, providing you with protection from the bad guys. If you've already got diarrhea, yogurt can help produce lactic acid in your intestines, which can kill off the nasty bacteria and get you feeling better, faster.
Live-culture yogurt (kefir) is also the best way to treat diarrhea caused by oral antibiotics. The antibiotics kill beneficial bacteria in the intestines, but live-culture products replenish those bacteria. Better still, use these from the time you begin the medication, and you may avoid the diarrhea altogether.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is good for treating intestinal inflammation, and it has antispasmodic properties as well. You can brew yourself a cup of chamomile tea from packaged tea bags, or you can buy chamomile flowers and steep 1 teaspoon of them and 1 teaspoon of peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for fifteen minutes. Drink 3 cups a day. Also the tannins in ordinary black tea have an anti-diarrheal effect.
Blueberries
Folk remedies have always had a special charm and they almost always work. The power of berries have been tried and tested in all areas of medicine, especially in destroying cancerous cells. It does not come as a surprise to believe that blueberries can cure diarrhea.
Rich in anthocyanosides which give blueberries antibacterial and antioxidant qualities, the germs causing diarrhea are destroyed by the intake of blueberries. Along with that, there is tannin which too has great soothing properties that reduce pain.
Cereals
This is a sort of grandmother’s recipe that we are all very familiar with. It works wonders and is the best remedy any day. Starchy foods can arrest diarrhea where it started. So go for rice water, cooked cereals etc. to remove the discomfort.
The starch can be made as thick as possible for maximum benefit. Avoid adding sugar or salt to it to prevent aggravation of symptoms. Foods that are high in fibre like oatmeal is not recommended while you have diarrhea as it can worsen the condition.
Carrots
Carrots are another soothing source of pectin. Cook some carrots until they’re soft, then drop them in a blender with a little water and puree into a baby-food consistency. Eat a quarter to a half-cup each hour.
Avoid foods that are rich in roughage, which can be hard to digest. That means no beans, cabbage or Brussels sprouts.
